ITEN consortium joins CERCOM circular economy resource efficiency project.
October 2021
As part of ITEN, Driven is contributing to CERCOM in a research programme to accelerate the transition of the road infrastructure sector in Europe, from a linear economy, into a resource-efficient circular economy.
It will deliver an innovative risk based framework and management tool to facilitate a step change in the adoption of RE & CE principles in procurement and multilifecycle management by NRAs across Europe.
The CERCOM project will provide best practice, defining a risk-based framework for assessing maintenance options over multiple lifecycles, identifying supporting indicators / performance metrics and recommending how to embed this thinking into public sector procurement practices.
Interview with Bob Allen and Dr Helen Bailey on asphalt and the circular economy

of tomorrow's technology. Click on the TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE NEWS LOGO to read the full article.
Climate change blog scope 1 and 2 emissions guidance document development
June 2021
At the recent ADEPT / Future Highways Research Group Highways Innovation Conference, Dr Helen Bailey, Technical Research Director for FHRG and Managing Director of The Driven Company Associates Limited, spoke about the work being done to standardise and provide guidance to local highway authorities in the measurement of carbon emissions.
Helen, who is working with Emma Pye (PYE Management Limited), outlines the background and the benefits of the project and how it may be progressed.
Emma and Helen are working with members of the FHRG, Proving Services and ADEPT to provide a guidance document to deliver a consistent approach for local authorities in assessing their scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.
"Though protocols and guides are available," says Helen, "a standard guidance document is needed to allow authorities to benchmark and monitor their emissions to plan for - and tackle - net zero targets and the climate emergency."

Celebrating the Centenary of the Women's Vote
15 February 2018
February 2018 marks 100 years since Parliament passed a law which
allowed some women, and all men, to vote for the first time: the
1918 Representation of the People Act.
As last year marked the 100th Anniversary since the founding of
The Institute of Quarrying it is fitting to acknowledge the pride the organisation has
in the many sucessful women working within the Quarrying and Extractives
industry.
The Institute of Quarrying originated in Caernarvon in 1917 with a
common purpose to advance the science and practice of quarrying
internationally in the interests of the public at large.
1924 saw women being admitted into the Annual Conferences for the first time.
A year later in 1925, the Institute elected it's first lady member,Mrs Anne Greaves.
Today the has Institute has approximately 5,200 members working around the world.

IQ and NSSGA Graduations Take Place in Las Vegas
7 March 2017
Driven’s Helen Bailey was on her travels again recently, taking in the bright lights of Vegas at the graduation for the IQ and NSSGA (National Stone Sand and Gravel Association) Graduate Conversion Programme. Travelling with the IQ’s Head of Education, Julian Smallshaw and IQ Education Associate Bob Davies the team, in conjunction with the NSSGA, launched the second year of the programmes (graduate conversion and junior management) in October 2016 and currently have 35 students on both courses.
The focus of the trip was to award and celebrate the top students on the distance learning programs, designed for aggregates industry professionals. Ahead of the graduation, the team attended the NSSGA Education Committee meeting to cover a range of educational topics, whilst also discussing the strategy for promotion and the further training needs in the USA. Earlier this year, the annual eSeMA-Seminar was held in Zakopane, Poland, where Helen was invited back (this time complete with an introduction in Polish) to give a presentation on ‘SMA: Quality, guarantee and specifications - experience from the UK and Ireland’. The presentation focussed on the various contractual arrangements, measurement and testing of materials whilst explaining how today’s needs must be met without comprising tomorrow in terms of performance and specification within the UK.
Over the two days there were various presentation with experiences from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and the Netherlands, providing valuable insight into how our European colleagues manage and maintain their road networks.
Driven Co Managing Director Attends Closing Meeting of the Consistend Research Project
9 November 2016
November sees Helen in Brussels for the final meeting and close out of a European
Research Project she has been working on as part of a research consortium.
Quality control during the construction process is, next to road design and material
selection, an important factor that determines the performance of an asphalt road with
respect to its service life. A longer functional life of a road has enormous impact on
the carbon footprint of that road due to minimized use of materials and energy during
the life cycle.
The research project, entitled ‘Consistend’, aims to combine available data on the
influence of construction parameters on service life and to incorporate the combined data
into a tool that can perform real time analyses of the effect of quality control measures
taken under specific conditions, resulting in a quantified risk reduction. The project is
part of the CEDR Trans-national Road Research Programme 2013 ‘Energy Efficiency’.
Project deliverables include a tool, created to improve the quality of work during
construction by improving the understanding of the risks involved in specific road
construction circumstances and by providing ways to manage the risks. The practical
use of this tool as part of procurement procedures will be demonstrated in pilot
projects and a guideline for implementation by national road authorities and road
industry will be provided.

Preparation Methods during Mix Design to Simulate Plant Produced Material.
The paper will be presented in Zurich at the European Asphalt Technology Association
(EATA) Conference in June 2017.
After a few days in New Hampshire, Helen flew straight onto Chicago where she has been
working to support the Institute of Quarrying’s education initiatives with their American
partners, the National Sand Stone and Gravel Association (NSSGA). The NSSGA is the world's
largest mining association by volume and represents the construction aggregates industry as
an advocate and leading voice to help build America’s infrastructure and economy.

of current technology trends, materials assessment and suitability to allow for better
conceptualisation, development and implementation into the market place to allow transformation
of the Mexican asphalt industry. This International seminar was a well-attended event where
Helen's presentation was warmly received and supported the development of new practices and
sustainability
The 25th and 26th October saw Helen attend the Mining Show and Conference; the biggest mining conference and exhibition in Middle East, Africa, Central Asia & South Asia and a catalyst of innovation for the mining sector

This provided a healthy forum for a balanced debate and enabled a number of topics to be explored, including
- Why breaking norms and progressing to accommodate women in industry is good for the bottom line
- Breaking the ‘high vis’ status quo, glass ceilings and flexibility constraints
- Empowering women to revitalise the current down cycle
