Cliff has been a chartered civil engineer for over forty years, much of which time he has spent in research and consultancy into pavement materials, specialising in asphalt surfacings. He was involved in the introduction of thin surface course systems into the UK with his reports instrumental to many in gaining Highways Agency approval prior to HAPAS.

He also developed the testing regime for high-friction surfacing systems approval, encouraged and promoted the need for durability, sustainability through recycling, use of secondary materials and low temperature mixtures. Cliff has sat on a range of British Standards Institution and British Board of Agrément committees with particular emphasis on test methods. His commitment is second to none, with 15 years holding the position of Convenor of the Comité Européen de Normalisation task group on test methods for asphalt materials.

Cliff has written a significant number of papers and publications which are used as reference material across the asphalt, highways engineering and quarrying industry both in the UK and Internationally. Cliff’s unique expertise complement existing skills within the Driven Company and also allow him to specialise in the resolution of problems/complaint in relation to asphalt materials and surfacing.
