Project Description
Stabilised Pavements Limited commissioned Driven to develop an independent technical white paper examining the role of innovative low-carbon binders, including calcined clay and clinker-free alternatives, in hydraulically bound materials (HBMs) for pavement construction and in-situ recycling applications.
The objective was to provide a technically robust, evidence-based resource that would support clients, highway authorities and infrastructure owners in understanding the opportunities, challenges and practical application of lower-carbon binder technologies within highway maintenance and renewal programmes.
Work Undertaken
Driven undertook a comprehensive review of:
- Current HBM technologies, standards and specifications.
- Emerging low-carbon binder solutions including calcined clay and ettringite-based systems.
- Relevant industry standards including EN 14227, PAS 2080 and circular economy principles.
- Existing project evidence and performance data.
- Carbon reduction opportunities associated with in-situ recycling and low-clinker binder systems.
- Future innovation pathways and recommendations for specification, procurement and delivery.
The commission included technical research, development of comparative performance assessments, analysis of carbon reduction benefits and case studies demonstrating real-world application.
