Putting Our Money Where Our Mission Is: Driven and 1% for the Planet

2-minute read

Summary: Driven is a member of 1% for the Planet, committing 1% of annual revenue, not profit, to environmental causes. Recent giving has supported The Carbon Literacy Trust and Big Give's match-funding programme, with future recipients chosen by Driven's own associates, in order of service to the company. It's a small, deliberate way of holding ourselves to the same standard we ask of our clients.

You’ll find the 1% for the Planet badge in the footer of a lot of sustainability consultancy websites. Fewer explain what it actually means, or what it’s cost them to earn it.

The commitment is simple to state and, deliberately, not simple to soften: 1% of annual revenue, not profit, given to environmental causes every year. That distinction matters. A percentage of profit can shrink to nothing in a lean year or be adjusted well after the fact. A percentage of revenue can’t, it’s a fixed, unavoidable line in the business, which is exactly why we see it as a genuine measure of commitment rather than a marketing line.

What that’s looked like recently

Our most recent contributions include in-kind support to The Carbon Literacy Trust, the charity behind the very accreditation we deliver to our own clients and a gift through Big Give’s match-funding programme, which multiplies the impact of every pound given. The Carbon Literacy Trust gift in particular closes a loop we’re proud of – we don’t just train organisations to understand their carbon impact, we help fund the charity that makes that training possible in the first place.

Chosen by the team, not the top

Where the next contribution goes isn’t decided in a boardroom. At Driven, each associate gets a say in where funding is directed, offered in order of how long they’ve been part of the company, so the causes supported reflect what actually matters to the people doing the work, not a generic corporate giving list.

That’s given us a spread of causes that says as much about our team as it does about the environment: woodland and terrestrial conservation through the Woodland Trust and National Trust, biodiversity and wildlife recovery through the Yorkshire, Sussex and Surrey Wildlife Trusts, marine restoration in Scotland through Balanced Horizon, landscape recovery through the Peak District National Park Foundation, and environmental education through Big Give alongside our ongoing support for The Carbon Literacy Trust.

Why it belongs on a page about our work

Mineral products and highways is an industry with a direct, physical relationship to land, materials and natural systems, it’s not incidental to what we do, it’s the context all of it sits in. Giving back to conservation and climate causes isn’t a separate initiative from our client work; it’s the same commitment to a “sustainable, resilient future that delivers enduring value for society and the environment” that sits behind everything else on this site, just pointed – for one per cent of our revenue, directly at the causes our own team cares about most.
