John Wainwright & Co Ltd – Carbon Literacy

Project Description

John Wainwright & Co Ltd partnered with Driven to deliver its Accredited Carbon Literacy Programme for Minerals & Highways, tailored specifically to the quarrying and asphalt supply chain environment.

As a long-established independent quarrying and aggregates business, Wainwright recognised the need to strengthen carbon capability across operational and leadership teams, ensuring that climate ambition translated into measurable, practical action and helped support its journey to PAS 2080.

The objective was to build confidence, competence and shared understanding across the business, aligning production, logistics and commercial decisions with net zero and long-term resilience goals.

Work Undertaken

Driven delivered its sector-specific, accredited Minerals & Highways Carbon Literacy programme, contextualised to Wainwright’s quarrying and asphalt operations. The programme included:

  • Climate science and policy translated into operational risk for mineral extraction and materials supply
  • Understanding Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions within quarrying, processing, plant and transport
  • Embodied carbon in aggregates and asphalt supply chains
  • Whole-life carbon thinking and alignment with PAS 2080 principles
  • Practical workshops focused on plant efficiency, fuel use, procurement, customer engagement and behavioural change
  • Facilitated group discussions to develop meaningful individual and organisational carbon pledges

The sessions were designed to be interactive and practical, encouraging open discussion about operational realities while identifying credible, deliverable carbon reduction opportunities.

Benefits to the Client

  • Accredited Carbon Literate professionals embedded within the business
  • Greater understanding of carbon hotspots across extraction, processing and transport
  • Clear identification of operational carbon reduction opportunities
  • Improved alignment between sustainability objectives and commercial delivery
  • Stronger internal engagement and ownership of climate action

The programme helped create a shared carbon language across quarry, plant and office-based teams, strengthening collaboration and empowering individuals to contribute to measurable change.
