Project Description
Kirklees Highways commissioned Driven to deliver its accredited Carbon Literacy training, tailored specifically to highways professionals operating within a local authority context.
With increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions across infrastructure services, Kirklees recognised that achieving Net Zero targets requires more than policy commitments, it requires informed, empowered people making climate-conscious decisions every day.
The objective was to build carbon awareness, capability and confidence across highways teams, ensuring that operational, procurement and strategic decisions better reflect climate risk, whole-life carbon and organisational ambition.
Work Undertaken
Driven designed and delivered an accredited Minerals and Highways Carbon Literacy programme aligned to The Carbon Literacy Project standards.
The programme included:
- Climate science fundamentals translated into infrastructure context
- Carbon impacts of highways materials, maintenance and asset management
- Local authority climate commitments and service-level implications
- Interactive workshops encouraging reflection and discussion
- Development of individual and organisational carbon reduction pledges
- Structured evidence submission for formal Carbon Literacy certification
The sessions were highly participatory, creating space for open discussion, challenge and shared learning. Real-world highways scenarios were used to move the conversation from abstract climate theory to practical, role-specific application.
Participants completed personal and professional action pledges, reinforcing accountability and translating learning into behaviour change.
Benefits to the Client
